Kiese Laymon in conversation with the McMullan Young Writers Workshop – Virtual – Thursday 7 pm

Millsaps College will host a Facebook live reading and conversation with award-winning writer Kiese Laymon, a longtime supporter of the emerging talents of students in the college’s McMullan Young Writers Workshop. There is no cost to view the online event.

Three bands on the outdoor stage out back at Fondren Guitars’ new location (next t Fondren Fitness) plus a cash bar. Learn more about the store’s retail offerings and music lessons while you’re there. Family friendly. $6 suggested ticket.

After Hours Concert Series presents RCF – Urban Foxes – Friday 7 pm

Urban Foxe’s After Hours Concert Series kicks off with Low Variety/Dead Gaze frontman Cole Furlow’s psych-pop outfit, RCF. The intimate monthly shows are ticketed with limited attendance and have the feel of a “house show,” a more intimate “listening room experience,” according to Urban Foxe’s co-owner Cody Cox. As of this writing, tickets are still available.

The Stolen Faces – Martin’s Downtown Friday 10 pm

Celebrating the music of The Grateful Dead, The Stolen Faces “deftly capture the spirit of the Dead, covering a wide variety of songs from the band’s expansive catalog and delivering them with the sort of energy and spontaneity that might have you thinking you’re standing in the Fillmore West in 1971.” Tickets are available.

ECOLUTION: Super Smash Bros Tournament – Ecoshed
– Saturday 8 am

Come watch, support, play in this tournament with around 100 players competing against each other for a $500 prize. The public is welcome. Family-friendly and free.

Make-A-Wish Mississippi Evening of Wishes Gala  – The Country Club of Jackson – Saturday 6 pm

Help raise critical funds needed to grant the wishes of Mississippi kids fighting critical illnesses. This year’s re-imagined event will include opportunities to get even closer to the mission through direct interactions with wish families and wish ambassadors. Tickets are available.
