ICYMI: Good News for JXN – June 8
#JXNMS is in the news and we’ve got the good stuff! In case you missed it, here are a handful of positive, uplifting features from the past couple of weeks.
Southwest Airlines has returned to Jackson. The airline is offering seven daily flights, including non-stop service to Atlanta, Houston and Baltimore-Washington International Airport, with weekend non-stops to Orlando, plus connections to 82 additional destinations. Also, airline partner American Airlines began offering a Saturday non-stop flight to Miami.; Frontier Airlines now offers Monday and Friday direct flights to Orlando; and Delta Air Lines has welcomed its mainline B717 aircraft with 110 seats with service to Atlanta.
Ecoshed is featured in and is on the front cover of the May/June issue of Metropolis Magazine, covering ecology, infrastructure, community and craft. Carbon Office, the firm founded by Ecoshed founders Salam Rida and Travis Crabtree, is featured in the photo.
Jackson State University has been named a 2019-2020 Fulbright Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Institutional Leader for the second consecutive year. The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) designation recognizes Jackson State’s significant engagement with the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. JSU is among 20 HBCUs to receive this distinction.
Sixty years after he was arrested in Jackson during the Freedom Rides, the late Rev. C.T. Vivian had a day named for him. Jackson officials read the proclamation last week and Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba hosted a ceremony Wednesday at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum to make the day official.
Midtown Depot in the Jackson’s Midtown neighborhood has begun soft openings of the city’s first outdoor beer garden. The space, adjacent to the former Lucky Town Brewing Company off Livingston Street, features shipping containers as beer and food service facilities, a stage, lawn games, a leashed pets welcome space and sculptural art. The menu includes draft beer and gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, along with locally-made Popsicles from Midtown neighbor< prose Pops at Coffee Prose.
